It exists to give heavier-recoiling calibers a scoring advantage on down-zone hits, balancing the harder gun to shoot fast against better points. USPSA Major is ≥165, Minor is ≥125; below 125 is not legal for score.
What's the exact power factor formula?
PF = Math.trunc((grains × fps) / 1000). A 124gr bullet at 1,050 fps = 130,200 / 1000 = 130.2, truncated to 130 — comfortably Minor. A 180gr .40 at 920 fps = 165,600/1000 = 165, just making Major. The calculator above truncates, matching how chrono stations report it.
What are the Major and Minor thresholds?
USPSA handgun: Major ≥165, Minor ≥125. Production, Carry Optics, Limited Optics, and PCC are scored Minor regardless of what you chrono. Rifle is Major 320 / Minor 150. Below 125 PF your match is scored as zero — you're shooting for practice that day.
How is power factor verified at a match?
At chrono, an RO pulls a bullet from your ammo and weighs it, then fires rounds from YOUR gun over a chronograph. PractiScore multiplies bullet weight by the average of velocities and divides by 1000. If you declared Major and miss 165, you're bumped to Minor scoring. If you declared Minor and miss 125, you score zero. They'll use the average of the highest velocities — speak up if they don't test all your provided rounds.
Common mistake: loading to the exact minimum?
Don't load to 125 or 165 on the nose. Chronographs vary, temperature swings velocity, and case headstamp differences move numbers. Experienced reloaders build a cushion of about +5 PF — a 170 Major load and a 130 Minor load. Chrono in the actual gun you'll shoot before match day, not a buddy's.
What velocity do I need to make Major with a given bullet?
Solve for velocity: fps = (PF × 1000) / grains. For Major (165) with a 180gr bullet: 165,000/180 = 917 fps minimum. With a 200gr bullet you only need 825 fps. Heavier bullets make Major at lower velocity (softer-feeling push); lighter bullets need more speed (snappier). Test combos in the calculator above.
Does power factor matter if I shoot all Alphas?
No — an A is 5 points in both Major and Minor. If you could shoot 100% Alpha you'd never benefit from Major. In the real world nobody does, so Major's C=4/D=2 cushion pays off on the inevitable down-points. That's the entire trade: Major rewards imperfect hits, Minor rewards a softer-shooting gun you can run faster and reload less.
Why divide by 1000?
It's purely to produce a memorable three-digit number (130, 165) instead of 130,200. The division has no physical meaning — it dates to an era of hand calculation and stuck as a standardization convenience. The underlying value is momentum (mass × velocity).
Which divisions can even use Major?
Open, Limited, Limited-10, Single Stack, and Revolver can score Major. Production, Carry Optics, Limited Optics, and PCC are Minor-only by rule.
