What is HHF and how is it different from hit factor?

HHF — High Hit Factor — is the benchmark a stage or classifier is measured against, representing a 100% run. Your hit factor is your actual points-per-second; dividing it by the HHF gives the percentage that drives match points and classification. On a stage, the highest hit factor shot that day becomes the de facto HHF and takes 100% of the points. On a classifier, the HHF is a published value. The calculator above works backward from an HHF to tell you the hit factor you need to hit a target percentage.

How do I calculate the hit factor I need to win?

Pick your target percentage of the HHF, then Target HF = HHF × (target % ÷ 100). Chasing 95% of an 8.00 HHF means you need 8.00 × 0.95 = 7.60. The calculator above does this for you and then converts it into a maximum stage time for each hit quality, so you can see exactly how fast you have to run a given set of hits to get there.

What target percentage should I aim for?

It depends on the field. At a local match, 90–95% of the likely stage-winning HHF usually lands you on the podium. To win a competitive club match you are looking at 100% — you have to be the High Hit Factor. Beating a strong regional field can require 105%+ on stages that suit you. Set the target to the result you actually need, then let the calculator show whether your planned time and hits can reach it.

Can you walk through a planned-time example?

Take a 28-round stage (140 points available) with an 8.00 HHF, targeting 95% — a 7.60 target HF. If you plan to shoot it in 17.00 seconds, you need 17.00 × 7.60 ≈ 130 points. That is 130 of 140, about 93% point quality, leaving roughly 10 points of margin — about five Charlies in Minor before you fall short. The calculator above flags whether your planned time is achievable, at the limit, or impossible.

What is Charlie tolerance and where does it come from?

Charlie tolerance is how many Charlies you can afford and still hit your target — a concept popularized by Eric Grauffel's teaching that the right speed-versus-points balance depends on the stage's hit factor. Low hit factor stages punish dropped points and demand Alphas; high hit factor stages reward speed and tolerate Charlies. The calculator above bands the HHF into accuracy, balanced, speed, and open stages and tells you roughly how many Charlies fit your round count.

How do the Charlie tolerance bands break down?

Below about 4 HHF it is an accuracy stage — shoot Alphas, points are expensive relative to time. Between 4 and 7 it is balanced; a handful of Charlies is fine. Between 7 and 12 it is a speed stage where up to roughly 20% Charlies keeps you competitive. Above 12 it is a wide-open stage where as much as half your hits can be Charlies and you still win on pure speed. The bands are guidance for where to spend your attention, not hard rules.

When is a make-up shot worth taking?

Only when the points you would recover, divided by your target hit factor, exceed the time the make-up costs. Recovering a Charlie in Minor is 2 points; at a 7.60 target HF that make-up is only worth it if you can fire it in under 2 ÷ 7.60 ≈ 0.26 seconds — which almost never happens. Misses are different: a Mike is a 10-point swing, so the make-up threshold is far more generous. The calculator above prints these thresholds for Charlie, Delta, and Miss.

How does target HF connect to classification?

Classification runs on the same percentage math. Your classifier hit factor divided by the published HHF gives your percentage, and your class is the average of your best recent ones: roughly 95%+ for Grand Master, 85% for Master, 75% for A, 60% for B, 40% for C. So setting a target percentage in the calculator is the same exercise as planning a classifier run — decide the percentage you need, then find the hit factor and time that deliver it.

How do I actually use this on match day?

During your walkthrough, estimate the stage's likely winning hit factor from the target presentation and movement, set that as the HHF, and pick the percentage you need. Read the maximum time per hit quality and the Charlie tolerance to decide your pace and where you can accept a Charlie. Then commit to that plan in the buzzer — the worst stage results come from changing the plan mid-run, not from the plan itself.

What advanced insight separates a good stage plan from a great one?

Great planners budget their points before they budget their speed. They decide in advance which targets get a guaranteed Alpha and which they will accept a fast Charlie on, so every shot has a pre-assigned accuracy standard. That removes the in-stage hesitation that wrecks hit factor.
